Japan Enhances Education in Soroti

The Embassy of Japan in Uganda has today handed over school facilities to Pioneer Primary School. The project of 79,899 USD has been funded to rehabilitate a classroom, office and staff blocks to improve the educational environment.

The facilities were handed over by Mr. Ryo Tokunaga, Head of Economic Cooperation of the Embassy of Japan in Uganda who represented the Japanese Ambassador of Japan to Uganda. Soroti is one of the districts in Eastern Uganda that has been heavily affected by the Karamojong cattle rustlers and the LRA insurgency that forced some people to live in the IDP camps.

Having been built over 70 years ago, the school had become dilapidated and some of the facilities such as the asbestos roofing were a health hazard. The project rehabilitated all these structures and constructed the teachers’ office. “It is our hope that as peace is restored, reinforcing the gains in education will accelerate grassroots development in the region as well as entire country” said Mr. Tokunaga during the ceremony that was held at the school.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
